Tushin Sunn: A Display Typeface for Bold Branding

I opened up a fresh Illustrator file, ready to begin sketching out a logo concept for a new creative studio. The brief was full of words like 'dynamic', 'forward-thinking', and 'visually arresting.' My first instinct wasn't to dive into shapes or color palettes, but to browse my type library. That's when I decided to give Tushin Sunn a proper test drive on a real project.

Tushin Sunn is a display typeface with a distinctly energetic and abstract character. Its forms feel contemporary, almost architectural in their construction, yet they possess a captivating, playful rhythm. It's not a quiet font. From the moment you type out a word, it demands attention and establishes a mood of confident creativity.

The First Impressions on a Brand Board

I started simply, typing the studio's name in a clean, medium weight of Tushin Sunn. Immediately, the abstract qualities came to life. Certain letterforms have a delightful tension between geometric stability and almost hand-drawn fluidity. This isn't a rigid, corporate sans serif. It’s a font with personality, and that personality is modern, a bit eclectic, and full of visual interest.

On the initial logo mockup, it worked perfectly as a standalone wordmark. The unique characteristics of Tushin Sunn meant the logo itself became a memorable graphic element, without needing additional icons or embellishment. I moved it onto a business card mockup. Even at a smaller scale, it retained its clarity and distinctive style, promising strong brand recognition right from that first handshake.

Building Out a Visual Identity

From that successful logo test, I began expanding the studio's identity system. Tushin Sunn naturally excels as a headline and display font. I used it for the hero text on their website mockup, where its contemporary design perspective created an immediate and engaging visual hook. For social media graphics promoting their services, it made every post title pop against simpler imagery.

Readability, for a display font, is key. Tushin Sunn manages its abstract traits wisely. The letterforms are open and distinct enough to remain legible even in shorter phrases used on posters or flyers. This allowed me to use it consistently across touchpoints—from the large format signage outside their imagined studio space to the clean headers on their digital presentation templates.

The consistency it provided was invaluable. Using Tushin Sunn as the primary accent font across all materials—logo, headlines, key marketing phrases—created a tight, professional, and cohesive brand perception. The audience gets a single, strong visual cue repeated in various contexts, which builds familiarity and engagement.

Practical Pairings and Extending the System

A display font like Tushin Sunn shouldn't carry the entire typographic system. For body text, explanatory copy, and longer paragraphs on their website, I paired it with a straightforward, neutral sans serif. This pairing created a perfect visual hierarchy: Tushin Sunn grabbed attention for the most important messages, while the supporting sans serif offered calm, readable utility. It's a classic strategy, but with Tushin Sunn as the star, it felt fresh and modern.

I also explored its included styles. Having a range of weights from light to bold is crucial for real-world application. The lighter weights offered a more refined elegance for certain applications, while the bold weight brought undeniable power to promotional posters. Checking for ligatures or alternate characters can add an extra layer of customization for a truly unique logo lockup.

From Mockups to Material Reality

The true test of a font often comes when you imagine it moving from screen to physical object. For this project, I visualized Tushin Sunn on various brand assets. On the studio's proposed merchandise, like tote bags or notebook covers, the typeface's energetic character translated beautifully, making the object itself feel designed and special.

In editorial design, for a hypothetical studio brochure, Tushin Sunn made section headers and pull quotes into dynamic focal points, breaking up lengthy text with captivating visual moments. Its abstract characteristics even hinted at a kind of visual language that could be extended into custom patterns or background textures for the brand, further deepening the identity.

Advice Before Committing to a Typeface

My experience testing Tushin Sunn on this project cemented a few practical steps I'd recommend to any designer. First, use it in multiple contexts immediately. Don't just type it in a font viewer. Place it on a business card, a web header, a product mockup, and a social post template. See how it scales and how its personality holds up.

Second, stress-test its pairing. Write a full paragraph of body copy alongside a headline in Tushin Sunn. Does the hierarchy work? Does the combination feel harmonious or disjointed? Finally, consider the licensing scope for your client's needs. For a commercial brand identity that will span digital and print, ensuring you have the appropriate commercial font license is a fundamental, professional step.

Tushin Sunn proved to be more than just a novel display font. It became the core typographic voice for this branding project. Its energetic and abstract characteristics, grounded by a contemporary design perspective, provided a ready-made attitude. It made the transition from a blank brand board to a full set of client-ready materials feel intuitive and inspired. For projects that need to communicate confidence, creativity, and a modern edge, it’s a typeface that doesn’t just sit on the page—it actively helps tell the brand’s story.
